The Statues of Lenin, Tolstoy, and Pushkin in New Delhi: A Bridge Between India & Russia

In the heart of bustling New Delhi, amidst the cacophony of traffic and the vibrant tapestry of Indian life, stood an unexpected trio of statues – Lenin, Tolstoy, and Pushkin, three titans of Russian history, their stoic gazes fixed on the passing throngs of humanity.

Lenin statue in Delhi India

Lenin, the revolutionary firebrand, stood tall and resolute, his piercing eyes reflecting the unwavering spirit of a man who dared to challenge the status quo. His statue, a testament to his enduring legacy, served as a reminder of the transformative power of ideas.

Leo Tolstoy statue in Delhi India

Tolstoy, the literary giant, exuded a quiet wisdom, his contemplative pose hinting at the depths of his understanding of the human condition. His statue, a tribute to his literary genius, stood as a beacon of intellectual enlightenment amidst the material pursuits of the city.

Alexander Pushkin statue in Delhi India

Pushkin, the poet laureate of Russia, bore a gentle demeanor, his eyes reflecting the profound beauty and melancholy of the Russian soul. His statue, a homage to his poetic prowess, served as a muse for the city’s aspiring poets and writers.

These three Russian icons, transplanted to the heart of India, represented a bond between two nations that transcended geographical boundaries. Their presence in Delhi symbolized a shared history, a mutual respect, and a deep-rooted connection that defied the tides of time.

The statue of Lenin, in particular, intrigued many Indians. They saw in him a revolutionary spirit that resonated with their own struggle for independence. His unwavering commitment to social justice and equality struck a chord with the common man.

Tolstoy’s statue, on the other hand, attracted the literati of Delhi. They marveled at his mastery of the written word, his ability to capture the essence of human emotions and the complexities of human relationships. His statue inspired them to delve deeper into the world of literature.

Pushkin’s statue, with its aura of romanticism, appealed to the city’s artists and dreamers. They found solace in his poetic verses, his ability to capture the beauty of nature and the fleeting moments of human connection. His statue served as a reminder of the power of art to transcend boundaries and connect hearts.

The presence of these Russian idols in Delhi was not merely a historical anomaly; it was a testament to the enduring legacy of cultural exchange and the power of shared values. They stood as symbols of a friendship that had weathered the storms of time, a friendship rooted in mutual respect and a shared appreciation for the arts, literature, and the pursuit of a just and equitable society.

As the sun set over Delhi, casting long shadows across the city, the statues of Lenin, Tolstoy, and Pushkin remained steadfast, their presence a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations to come. They stood as silent guardians of a friendship that spanned continents, a friendship that defied the odds and continued to blossom amidst the ever-changing landscape of global relations.

Tackling India’s Textile Pollution: Natural Dyes as Sustainable Solutions

The textile industry in India is a significant contributor to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), providing employment to 45 million people. However, this water-intensive sector is also a major polluter, responsible for one-fifth of the world’s industrial water pollution. One of the primary culprits behind this pollution is the usage of synthetic dyes, which leads to the production of vast amounts of dye wastewater. When released untreated, this wastewater can have long-term adverse effects on soil and water bodies, posing risks to both human and ecological health.

In an effort to address this pollution problem, the Charaka Handloom Cooperative in rural Karnataka took a pioneering step in 2012 by switching from synthetic dyes to natural alternatives. Natural dyes, derived from sources such as roots, berries, and plants, offer a sustainable and eco-friendly solution to the textile industry’s pollution woes.

Terence Peter, CEO of Charaka Handloom Cooperative, elaborates on their approach, saying, “Well, we actually use six ingredients for natural dyes. The major one is adike chogaru, which is areca nut, betel nut syrup. This is a natural syrup and is grown in the surrounding areas. This is the one used in maximum. Next, we use pomegranate skin, which we get from the local market. After drying it, we extract colors by boiling it. Pomegranate skin provides us with two to three different colors. However, the most commonly used natural dye source is, once again, the areca nut syrup.”

Areca nut syrup, locally known as adike chogaru, is a by-product created during the processing of areca nuts for sale in the market. In the past, this syrup was discarded as waste. However, after recognizing its potential as a natural dye, Charaka Handloom Cooperative has transformed the situation. Farmers now sell this by-product to earn additional income, promoting sustainability and reducing waste.

Jagada Rajappa, a Natural Dye Consultant at Charaka, explains why areca nut syrup is an excellent choice for natural dyeing: “The property of the areca nut solution contains a certain kind of tannin in it. It is good enough to fix a color onto the fiber or yarn. About two decades ago, this by-product was going to waste as farmers didn’t know how to utilize it. However, with experimentation, we discovered that the color obtained is as good as that from Acacia arabica. We decided to use it as a local dye material, benefiting farmers, traders, and generating employment in the process.”

While natural dyeing brings numerous environmental advantages, it also comes with its challenges, such as a relatively high water requirement and limitations in the color spectrum it can produce. Additionally, the choice of fabrics it can be applied to may be limited, and scalability can be an issue. However, Rajappa remains optimistic, suggesting that these challenges can be overcome through technological advancements.

He explains, “With the innovation of newer equipment, we are using enzymes, wetting agents, and the streaming method. With this steaming method, only one-fourth of the water is needed, reducing the water consumption considerably.”

The transition from synthetic dyes to natural alternatives represents a positive step towards reducing the environmental impact of the textile industry. As technological advancements continue to enhance the natural dyeing process, the prospect of sustainable, eco-friendly textiles becomes increasingly attainable. By harnessing the potential of locally available materials like areca nut syrup, the industry can not only minimize pollution but also contribute to the well-being of both the environment and local communities.

In conclusion, the adoption of natural dyes as a more sustainable alternative in the textile industry holds promise for a greener, cleaner future.

Combating Illegal Bird Poaching in South-Central West Bengal

In the heart of West Bengal’s expansive wetlands, migratory birds have long found sanctuary during their winter sojourns. However, a dark shadow looms over these avian havens as illegal poaching threatens their survival. The districts of Murshidabad, Malda, Birbhum, and Purba Bardhaman in south-central West Bengal have become hotspots for this unlawful trade. Local non-profits and the state forest department have united to protect these precious birds and their fragile ecosystems.

The Poaching Menace

The year started with a significant breakthrough when West Bengal forest officials intercepted a middle-aged man transporting three nylon bags filled with migratory birds from Patan beel, a vast wetland in Murshidabad. He was en route to deliver them to a buyer. The arrest and subsequent judicial custody for seven days underscored the severity of the poaching problem.

For several years, these districts have witnessed migratory birds falling prey to poachers who ensnare them in nets, later selling them as exotic delicacies. This illegal practice has not only jeopardized the bird population but also threatened their habitats.

Rescue and Vigilance

Recent winters have seen an upsurge in vigilance efforts by the state forest department, bolstered by intelligence provided by environmental non-profits. Between December 2022 and April 2023, volunteers from the Kolkata-based Human & Environment Alliance League (HEAL) joined forces with local administration to dismantle 47 kilometers of trapping nets in Murshidabad and Malda. Their relentless efforts led to the rescue and release of over 900 birds, representing around 30 different species, primarily short-toed larks—a migratory species that seeks refuge from the frigid winters of Mongolia, China, and Russia.

During this period, at least 11 individuals involved in bird poaching were arrested, booked under the Wild Life Protection Act, 1972. After spending seven days in judicial custody, they were released on bail.

Protecting Migratory Birds

Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Pradip Kumar Bauri, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) for Nadia-Murshidabad, emphasized the distinction between exotic and wild birds. Exotic birds, bred in captivity, can be sold with a breeder’s license as per a change in the Wild Life Protection Act in 2022. On the other hand, wild birds, including migratory species like short-toed larks, are strictly off-limits for capture, sale, purchase, or killing.

Raids are conducted when the forest department receives information from their network, often in coordination with local police stations. Environmental non-profits like HEAL, in collaboration with organizations such as the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), have played a pivotal role in providing information that has led to several arrests.

Migratory Birds and Vital Habitats

West Bengal, especially the Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary in Birbhum district, plays a crucial role in conserving migratory birds. The 2020 Asian Waterbird Census recorded the highest number of waterbirds in India, with Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary hosting a substantial population. While protected wetlands and lakes provide relative safety to these avian visitors, numerous unprotected wetlands and agricultural fields prove to be perilous. Birds like the short-toed lark often fall prey to these treacherous traps. Bright lights are used to guide the birds into these deadly nets.

HEAL members have emphasized that south-central West Bengal has emerged as a well-established hub for the illegal trade in migratory birds, with larks being sold live, their prices varying in different markets. This trade has turned secretive due to recent campaigns against it. Poachers now maintain secret contacts with consumers and restaurant owners, arranging transactions at their convenience.

A Long Road Ahead

The battle against bird poaching remains arduous. Local anti-poaching campaigners attempt to persuade poachers to release the birds and remove the nets, but if persuasion fails, they notify the forest department. The fight to protect avian treasures in West Bengal continues, with Karul beel, one of the region’s avian hotspots, attracting thousands of migratory ducks each winter.

The concerted efforts of non-profits, local communities, and the forest department are essential to ensure the well-being of these migratory birds and their habitats. Public awareness and education will play a pivotal role in eliminating this deeply ingrained practice, which has persisted for far too long. The future of protected birdlife in West Bengal depends on unwavering conservation efforts.

The Complex Permit Procedure

Foreign journalists seeking to visit restricted or protected areas in India must navigate a series of bureaucratic steps, involving multiple government departments. The procedure includes the following key steps:

Referral for Direct Requests: If a request is received directly by a State Government or any other authorized authority, it is referred to the MEA’s External Publicity Division, along with a copy to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Prescribed form through Indian Mission: Foreign journalists visiting India on a short-term visit and wishing to go to restricted or protected areas are advised to apply for a permit in the prescribed form through an Indian Mission.

Required Documents: To apply for the PAP or RAP permit, foreign journalists need to submit various documents, including an application form, a letter from their organization, copies of their passport and latest visa, a photograph, and a tentative itinerary with travel dates.
