Kamegowda, who hails from a small village in Mandya district of Karnataka, got noticed when Prime Minister Narendra Modi took his name in ‘Mann Ki Baat’ recent week. He was compared to ‘Water Warrior’. Also mentioning them, Prime Minister said that on his own strength, Kamegowda has dug more than 16 ponds in the village Dasnadodi and its surrounding areas.

 

At the age of 85 years, Kamegowda takes his animals to graze grass as well as he has taken up the task of digging new water in her village. Kamegowda says that there is a lot of water problem in his area, so he is engaged in the work of making small ponds to remove water problem in his area and to conserve water.

 

It is very surprising to know that until now Kamegowda has dug 16 ponds with his own hard work. It may also be that the 16 ponds he has built are not very big but his efforts are quite big. Today, because of so many ponds in the whole area, a new life has been found. It is worth mentioning that Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the entire countrymen aware of his life by referring to Kamegowda at the ‘Mann ki Baat’ program.

 

Kamegowda lives in a small house. His house is decorated with all the awards that Kamegowda has received so far. He reflects on the recognition he received for his work, including the state’s Rajyotsav Award. Kamegowda tells his whole story that he was 5 years old and he lived like a wild animal. His mother had 10 children; He had no special affection for his mother. He used to sleep with his sheep and other animals because he was much closer to them. He had no fear of birds and snakes. He has seen the animal closely, how much they get disturbed in the heat and roams around for water.

 

He saw this suffering of animals when he was young. Then he thought that if he could not reduce the suffering of these animals then he is really a monster. And then he started digging the pond.

 

For this success of Kamegowda, the Government of Karnataka has also announced a lifetime free bus pass to Kamegowda so that he can travel on buses operated by the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation or KSRTC as per his wish. And he should not face any kind of problem.

The COVID19 pandemic has created a tense situation for the whole world. Both developed and developing countries are facing problems. The biggest problem during these testing times is the downfall in the economic growth. Also, it is important to take care of all the sections of the society. In such a condition, the Government of India tried to generate funds by starting the PM CARES Fund. 

 

What is PM CARES Fund?

Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM CARES Fund) was formed by the Indian Government on 28 March 2020. It was created to provide financial assistance during the coronavirus outbreak. The fund is handled by Minister of Home Affairs- Amit Shah, Minister of Finance- Nirmala Sitharaman and Minister of Defence- Rajnath Singh with PM Modi as its Chairman. Donations made under this fund before the end of June enjoy tax deductions under section 80G of The Income Tax Act,1961.

 

PM CARES Fund vs. PM National Relief Fund

Although both the funds are meant for emergency conditions in India. But they have some basic differences in them. The first basic difference is that PM Cares is for pandemic. And National Relief Fund is for natural disasters. The handling committee of PM CARES Fund has Prime Minister, Home Minister, Finance Minister and Defence Minister. While the PM National Relief Fund has Prime Minister, Finance Minister, President of Indian National Congress, and representatives of commerce industry. Also, donations made under PM cares are considered as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Relief fund does not fall under CSR. Another important difference between the two is that the relief fund reveals the information of the donations made in a year. PM Cares fund does not perform any activity of that sort.

 

Use of PM CARES Fund

So far, the PM CARES Fund have received INR 9677.9 crore. INR 2098.2 crore and INR 7,855 crore have been additionally allocated to them from other government sources. In May, the government announced that 32% of the collected funds have been allocated for COVID19. This money was used in buying ventilators, supporting migrant workers, and for funding a COVID-19 vaccine. Many actors, businessmen, common men have donated money in this fund. Government employees have donated their one-day salary to the fund. Collectively, they have made a donation of INR 4308.3 crore. Also, they are going to donate their one-day salary every month till March 2021.

 

Row over PM Cares

Lately, PM CARES Fund remained in news when people questioned about where the fund is being spent. An RTI application was filed to seek information regarding the fund. On which the Prime Minister’s Officer refused to do so. They say that PM CARES is not a public authority. Challenging this a plea was filed in court, asking to consider PM CARES Fund under RTI. And provide information related to it to the public. The court on the hearing dismissed the plea. After that, this issue was taken to social media. This issue trended there. Users expressed their views in favor of and against this issue.

 

Is it serving its purpose?

This fund was started by the government to provide relief to the public during the pandemic. But so far, the question remains that whether it has served its purpose or not. Even after allocation of funds for different purposes. States are still asking for financial help from the central government. Migrant workers are still seeking a way to reach their homes. Delhi and Bihar are still having arguments over the payment of Shramik Special trains. The need of the hour is to control the spread of the virus. The Government has taken steps to do the same. And it will be doing so. The main aim should be to use these funds for the needy. This how the purpose for creating this fund would be fully served.

With the advent of video on demand platforms in India, the face of the media and entertainment industry has changed beautifully. Consumers found a new form of entertainment medium. Where they can watch as and whenever they want. There is no regulatory authority keeping a check on the online content. Therefore, bold and explicit content shown in the web shows available on these platforms has become a debatable issue.

   

Emergence of OTT in India

World’s second-largest base of internet users in India. When Reliance Industries stepped in the telecom sector. Internet became very cheap. And that’s how binge-watching became the new cool.

 

The Concept of Video-on-demand platforms came to India in 2008. BIGFlix by Reliance Entertainment was the first OTT (Over-The-Top) platform of India. Two years later nexGTv was launched. It became the first of its kind platform to live stream the Indian Premier League (IPL). Since then many other OTT platforms like Ditto Tv (now merged with ZEE5), SonyLiv, Voot, AltBalaji, Airtel Xtream, Vodafone Play etc. emerged. At present, there are approximately 40 Video-on-demand platforms in India. They provide you content in English, Hindi and other regional languages.

 

Popular OTT Platforms

Among all the available platforms, some became extremely popular. Hotstar was launched in 2015. It is the highest subscribed OTT platform in India. Till 2018, it had 150 million active subscribers. After investing INR 120 crore in 2019, it started its original shows labeled as ‘Hotstar Specials’. In 2020, Hotstar’s ‘Special Ops’ became extremely popular.

 

American OTT platform Netflix came to India in 2016. With time it became extremely popular among the youth. ‘Netflix and Chill’ became the all-time favorite pass time for Netflix subscribers. It has 15.8 million paid subscribers until March 2020. Its first Indian web series Sacred Games gained immense popularity.

 

Amazon Prime Video is another popular video-on-demand platform. Launched in the same year as Netflix came to India. Its web series Mirzapur gave tough competition to Netflix’s Sacred Games. It has around 2000 movies and 300 web shows. Recently, Shoojit Sircar’s “Gulabo Sitabo” is all set to be released on Amazon Prime Video on 12 June.

 

Web Content: A debatable issue

The entertainment industry in India is handled by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Every Film before releasing for the public is censored and certified by the concerned authorities. But there is no such board or authority for censoring the content available on the web. And that is the biggest issue of recent times. It is also highly debatable. Several times people have complained about the explicit and bold content of Web series. Violence, Sex, and Nudity have become so common in the web shows. That people are now questioning, whether all this is required or not.

 

One section of the society believes that it is okay to have such bold content. In some instances, sexually explicit scenes of violence are the need of the storyline. Removing such scenes might confuse the viewers. And the story will not be portrayed as it is written. The other sect of society believes that having nudity, sex, and violence in web series is affecting Indian Values.

 

Unlike western countries, Indians are not that open to intimate scenes and the violence involved shown in web shows. This makes it uncomfortable to watch these shows with the family. You have to consciously choose what you can watch with your family and whatnot.

 

Censorship: A big question

Netflix’s first and immensely popular Hindi web series ‘Sacred Games’ was questioned for its content soon after its release. This raised the question of whether the online content requires censorship or not. After having a lot of debate Amazon Prime decided to self-censor its content. Now, the scenes including nudity are blurred out. Similarly, other video on demand platforms are also planning to do the same.

 

The Bombay High Court, in one of its hearings last year, has asked the concerned Ministries to make arrangements for pre-screening of the web series. It means that before the release of the web series on online streaming platforms, they will be watched by officials appointed by the ministry. The trailers and online advertisements of the same will also be reviewed.

 

Recent Controversies

As soon as the web series became a trend, many controversies came up related to them. Whether we talk about ‘Sacred Games’ or the recently released ‘Patal Lok’. They remained in news for both good and bad reasons. ‘Hasmukh’ on Netflix was also controversial. It was even removed from the platform for some time. Amazon Prime’s Patal Lok was questioned for its dialogues in some scenes. Lately, Ekta Kapoor was in talks for her show ‘XXX: Uncensored Season 2’. She was accused of demeaning and disrespecting the Army in one of its episodes. As a result, the scene was removed. And she also made a public apology.

 

This is not the first time when something of this sort is happening. It has happened every time when somebody tried to show something out of the league. But the real issue is that there are times when such bold language and scenes are not required. The story can be completed without those scenes. And that’s where the question of censorship arises.

Impact on different Entertainment Industries

The Digital industry that includes the Over The Top (OTT) platforms has gained more subscribers than usual. They are providing their consumers with new and exciting content every month. And because of spending the whole day at home. Consumers are binge-watching.

 

The Television industry had both good and bad effects. On one hand, production and shooting of all daily soaps have been stopped for an indefinite period. It has led to the loss of jobs for the daily wage workers of the industry. And on the other hand, re-telecast of popular TV shows like Ramayan, Mahabharat, Byomkesh Bakshi and Shriman Shrimati have made some new records. The viewership of DD National surprisingly increased. This led to other Hindi GECs telecasting their old classic shows.

 

Indian Film Industry has been adversely affected. Shootings and production of films stopped in all over India. Not just Bollywood but other regional film industries are also affected by nationwide lockdown.

 

Impact of COVID-19 on Indian Film Industry

India is the largest producer of films around the globe. Every year thousands of films are being produced and shot in India. From Raja Harishchandra to Alam Ara to Anand to Chandni to Dil Wale Dulhaniya Le Jayeingein and Kabir Singh. Bollywood has given us some of the greatest films to cherish forever.

 

But the spread of coronavirus has led to a halt in the process of producing emotions on white celluloid screen. With the announcement of nationwide lockdown. All the activities included in the film making process were stopped for an indefinite period. Cinema Halls and Malls are also shut down. That is why, many big-budget films like ‘Sooryavanshi’, ‘83’, etc. had to postpone their releases.

 

According to the industry officials, this was the first time in history, when the industry has been shut down for a long indefinite period. The Actors are shown on the screen. But there are hundreds of people including the director, cameraman, Lightman, spot boy, technicians, and others that play an integral role. This pandemic has not only lead to postponement of film releases. It has also led to the loss of jobs for a number of daily wage workers in the industry. Actors who are bound with one project cannot sign other projects because no one knows how the shooting schedule after the lockdown will look like.

 

Some directors are looking forward to releasing their films on OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Gulaabo Sitaboo by Shoojit Sarcar already released on Amazon Prime on 12th June. But it will cause losses to movie theaters. Industry officials are debating over this topic. A section of them founds it right. While the other section opposes this.

 

Not just the mainstream Hindi Cinema but regional film industries are also affected by this pandemic. Some of them say that this is that time of year when they release their big-budget films and earn profits. But in the current scenario, it is not possible.

 

Indian Film Industry during Covid19 and post Covid19 after effects

Keeping in mind the current situation, officials believe that getting back to normal for the film industry will be difficult. It will take a year or more for the industry to process in the same manner as they use to before lockdown. More strict guidelines will be issued by the Central Government. Being an industry that requires extensive labor, it will be difficult to work with a limited crew. But as they say “Something is better than nothing”. With this hope, the industry will hopefully resume shortly. And provide some mind-blowing content for their audience.

Movie Shooting resumes in few Indian states with strict guidelines

After a long lockdown across India, few states have eased down the restrictions to open-up the economy. Providing further relaxation, the Government of Uttarakhand released its SOPs for filming around Himalayan region. The govt has asked to production houses to adhere all the rules and precautions like thermal screening of all crews daily, proper social distancing and frequent sanitisation of all filming crews. As per the guidelines from the state, for indoor shooting there would be 15 people and 30 people for outdoor shooting activities.  As time passes, many other Indian states will come with their SOPs to start filming activities.

Practiced in the regions of Varanasi, Rajasthan and many cities of Uttar Pradesh, India mud wrestling, also known as ‘Kushti or Pehlwani,’ is gradually camouflaging itself in the shadow of what we called ‘gymnasium.’ With modernization this traditional sport is gradually going bleak in Indian subcontinent.

 

History of Indian wrestling

This sport is ancient. It is so ancient that even ‘Mahabharata’ the great Hindu epic book has its mention. The ancient times with Mughals as their rulers witnessed the true and real forms of wrestling. Around 3,000 years ago, in the courts of Mughal rulers ‘Kushti’ was introduced. It had some of emergence and characteristics of Persian game known as ‘Koshti Pahlevani.’ The name generally meant ‘heroic wrestling.’

Life of a Celibacy (Pehlwan)

The wrestlers are also known as ‘Pehalvans’ in Hindi. They are trained under the guidance of a guru known as ‘Ustad.’ They live together and practice every morning by getting up at 3:30 am. They have one blanket and only a handful of clothes with them in their training. Their clothing is Kowepeenam or loincloth.

 

They follow a hard routine and live life of discipline and celibacy. ‘Akhara’ (mud arena) is the place where they practice. The mud is mixed with oil, ghee and many other ingredients. The Akhara soil is ploughed and worshiped by the wrestlers in the morning each day.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Every Akhara has Lord Hanuman’s temple as he is considered as patron deity of Hindu wrestlers. For the practice session they have a room built in Akhara where they have all the heavy clubs and equipment for strengthening their bodies, for example; dumbbells, nal, garnal (neck weight), gada (mace). Many of the Akhara rooms have now simple and effective new equipments which can be found in many of the gyming institute now-a-days. Each Akhara has a caretaker too who remains in the Akhara in night also and guards the valuable equipments of wrestlers’ lives.

 

This traditional sport is usually considered as a rural sport and usually the peasants or semi-urban lower class people choose their career as wrestlers. Each wrestler comes for training voluntarily and takes serious wrestling training where he strictly ordered what to take in diet and what to do in spare times. They aren’t allowed to be sexually active. Thus, they only practice from morning to evening for honing their skills. 

 

Wrestlers, competitions and “Great Gama”

The wrestlers take part in dangals (Wrestling Championship tournament) and many other competitions mainly on the 2^nd day of Sukla Pakshha of Ashadh month of Hindu calendar. Many wrestlers take competitions seriously and go for international levels for fulfilling their dreams. They celebrate their victory by returning to their place dancing and consuming bhang prepared by them only with some extra pepper.

 

The Great Gama was a great wrestler and he won the ‘World Wrestling Championship (WWC)’ organized by John Bull society of London in 1910.  

 

In 1994, a book on wrestling was published by the Pushpak Printing Press titled ‘Bharatiya Kushti- Ek Parampara’ (a tradition). It had articles in Devanagri script and pictures of ‘Great Gama’ and ‘Mahadev.’ The book valorized the hardships of the two and praised their achievements. They were the greatest wrestlers of that time and the book had their photos with different weapons. By that book many wrestlers were inspired and considered the two legends as their inspiration.

Women Wrestlers of India

Indian Akhadas used to be providing training to only aspiring men who wishes to become a wrestler for several centuries. Following the tradition of the sport culture in India, the kushti always remains a game for men. However, there is one Akhada in Varanasi which has broken all the myths that women or girl too can become a good wrestler.

 

This has only happened after the release of Amir Khan film ‘Dangal’. Swaminath Akhada at Tulsi Ghat has proved that the women are no more exception for wrestling in India and finally has welcomed women wrestlers at its Akhada for training after 478 years. This film has opened huge edges for young and budding girls who are aspiring to be wrestler and represent their nation on International platforms.

 

Current Scenario of Wrestling in India

‘Wrestling’ synonymous of ‘mud wrestling’ and ‘Kushti’ is slowly losing its popularity as more and more western sports are being adopted. The modernization, globalization, and the influence of the west have lowered the importance of many traditional sports and practices. Almost all the mud akharas have disappeared and the ancient subculture of the beautiful sport has been limited to mat or turf in Olympics or Commonwealth.

 

Akharas have gone down in numbers maybe from 100 to just 40 in a state, which is too less for the traditional sport for being alive in the hearts of people. The new name is being adopted by every remaining akharas which is ‘Vyayam Shala’ (Hindi word for gymnasium). There are still rural areas and villages who are trying their best to live this old tradition of wrestling, like Nathdwara and Mewar regions of Rajasthan. As a result, akharas can only be found in nooks and corners of the country now.

 

It is a sport which still gives higher regards to masculine pursuit, even after female players like “Gita” and “Babita” have proven their worth in this field. Sadly, the physical culture in mud cannot become the mass culture even after Bollywood blockbuster hit movies like ‘Sultan.’

Ministry of Human Resource Development along with the Department of Science and Technology has played a major role in this scheme. 75 Startup Support hubs have been set by them in different National Institutes of India.

Itanagar0, Miao, Zin Along, Namdapha and Tipi, Sejusa Bhalukpong, and Pasighat are restricted areas.

 

• Restricted ares in Manipur

In Manipur, Imphal, Loktak Lake, Keibul Deer Sanctuary & Waithe Lake Konjam War Memorial, and Moirang INA Memorial are restricted areas.

 

• Restricted ares in Mizoram

The capital city of Mizoram, Aizawl, Vairangte, and Thingdawl are restricted.

 

• Restricted ares in Sikkim

Phodang, Gangtok, Tashiging, Tong and some other areas of Sikkim are also restricted.

 

Film Visa in India

The whole process of Film Visa proposals is handled by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The script is first approved by the Indian Government. After the completion of the film, it is first shown to the government. Only the shots approved by the government are shown to the public. For shooting films and TV serials in restricted/prohibited areas, clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs is needed. In other cases, I & B Ministry gives and communicates the clearance to other ministries. Even for shooting documentaries or print shoots in restricted area special permission is needed from Indian Embassy/High Commissions in foreign country then another permission from Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. This process requires a lot of time and continuous followup from govt departments for approval.

 

Film Visa is granted to a foreigner-only for a specific film. It is valid for a maximum of one year. You have to extend it, if your shooting schedule is longer than that. Only 125 crew members are allowed under this Visa. Those coming for shooting have to register themselves with Foreigner Regional Registration Offices.

 

In 2015, Leslee Udwin’s documentary named ‘India’s Daughter’, based on the Nirbhaya Gangrape case of 2012 was telecasted by BBC. It had some visuals that were harmful to the image of the country. Later, its telecast was banned in the country. As a result, the Government of India made the rules for shooting of films in India by foreign nationals stricter. Now before approving the visa, the subject of the film is important. They also check whether it is harmful to the country’s global image or not. It is not issued until it gets approved by all the concerned officials.

 

Video filming Permits for restricted areas of India

Two types of permits are issued to foreigners visiting restricted areas of northeast India:

 

• Protected Area Permit (PAP)

According to Foreigners (Protected Areas) Order 1958, a Protected Area Permit is required for all the foreign nationals visiting sensitive areas in India. To get PAP, tourists must be in a group of two. A registered travel agent is required to be with them. There are some areas where they cannot enter at all. PAP is issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs for 10 days. Different concerned authorities can also issue PAP. Indian citizens, on the other hand, requires the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit these areas. ILP can be issued online and offline from Delhi, Kolkata, Shillong, and from the office of CID in that area.

 

• Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

According to Foreigners (Restricted Areas) Order 1963, non-Indians were required to get Restricted Area Permit to visit restricted areas in India. It can be issued to a single traveler. Overseas embassies and sometimes the airport of the state in which the restricted city is situated issues RAP. Indians do not need any permit to visit these areas.

 

Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram that were earlier included in the list of Protected areas were removed from that list in 2011. However, to visit other restricted/protected area foreign nationals needs to get the permit.

Pukhraj Durry Udhyog

Pukhraj Durry Udhyog is making rugs from generations. They are working as a co-operative. They are working with 48 families of the village that make rugs. It is the famous Durry Udhyog in India. It is managed by Chhotaram Prajapat. He is the son of Pukhraj Ji, the man who started this factory. It is registered as a small-scale unit under Government of India. They are making rugs using the traditional interlock weaving method. They don’t have any photographs of their designs. Every design is made by them without taking any help from a design book. It is among the must-visit tourist attractions of Salawas village in Jodhpur.

Roopraj Durry Udhyog

Just like the Pukhraj Durry Udhyog, Roopraj Durry Udhyog is also famous for its hand-woven rugs. They made rugs of different sizes. They use cotton yarn for warp and weft. Fast colors are used by them while making rugs. This makes their rugs reversible and washable. You can choose from a vast variety of designs and sizes. Moreover, these rugs are light in weight and require low maintenance. Roopraj Durry Udhyog is also registered as a small-scale unit with the Government of India. Their rugs are also popular worldwide.

Sports is related to the physical growth of an individual. Any competitive or non-competitive physical activity comes under sports. It teaches a person sportsmanship and teamwork. It is an integral part of everyone’s lives.

 

Sports in India

India is a country where large numbers of popular and less popular sports are played. From every Indians love, Cricket to Kabaddi, we have a long history of sports in India. Indian players are showcasing their talent in India and abroad. India hosts the Indian Premier League (IPL) every year. Players from around the world come to India and play for their respective teams. It also hosts Indian Super League and Pro Kabaddi league in the country.

And as a result, now they are almost forgotten. Forgotten gems of India

India has a long list of games that were played for a certain period and then lost its importance. Some of them are given below:

 

• Gilli-Danda

Gilli-Danda is an Indian game that originated about 2500 years ago. It is played with two sticks. The longer one is called Danda and the smaller one is called Gilli. There are no specific dimensions for the sticks. It can be played with any even number of players. Standing in a circle the Striker hits the Gilli with danda. He tries to throw it far away from the fielders. The players of the opponent teams try to catch the Gilli. In the meantime, striker try to touch the point outside the circle, which is decided earlier. If the opponents successfully catch the Gilli then the striker is out. If not, then the fielder who is at the shortest distance from the Gilli gets the chance. He tries to throw the Gilli inside the circle. If he successfully does that then the striker is out. Rules of these games varies in different place. It is known as ‘Danguli Khela’ in Bangladesh, ‘Dandi Biyo’ in Nepal and Tipcat in English. Shobhit Maurya is the World Champion of this game. In 2014, a movie named ‘Viti Dandu’ was released. It was based on this game.

 

• Pitthu (Seven Stones)

Pitthu or seven stones is a game played between two teams. Minimum six players are needed in one team. In this game, seven stones are placed one over another. A player from one team tries to break the small tower of stones with a bowl. His team then try to rebuild it. The other team try to hit one of the players from the opponent team with the bowl before they rebuild the tower. It is believed that this game was played by Lord Krishna. It is played today in rural India. It is known as ‘Lagori’ in Karnataka, ‘Dabba Kali’ in Kerala and ‘Ezhu Kallu’ in Tamil Nadu. In 2015, the Indian Lagori Premier League was held by the Amateur Lagori Federation of India to revive this forgotten game.

 

• Lattu (Spinning Top)

The spinning top was discovered in 3500 BC. It is a wooden top with a pointed nail and a string. You can find many designs of a spinning top. In this game, all the players release their top from the rope on the ground at the same time. It spins on the ground. Then all the players try to get it back with the strings. The person who fails to complete this process loses the toss. That player has to spin his top inside a circle. The player who won the toss spin his top in the circle and try to get other tops out of that circle. This game is also played in another way. All players spin their tops one by one. The person whose top spins for longer duration wins. It is known as ‘Bambaram’ in Karnataka and ‘Bongarau Aata’ in Andhra Pradesh.

 

• Pachisi

Pachisi is a board game which is the traditional version of Ludo. But experts say that it is not similar to Ludo. It is played on a symmetric crossed board. It has three dices and sixteen pieces. It can be played between 2-4 players. It is played in a team of two players each. One team has Yellow and Black pieces. The other team has Red and Green pieces. The team whose pieces reach the Charkoni (center) first wins the game.

 

• Chowka Bara

Chowka Bara is a board game. It is played between 2-4 players. The board is divided into 25 squares. It is played by throwing the cowrie shells. There can be four or six cowrie shells. Shells that land upward has a value of 1. Shells that lands downwards has zero value. Two terms are mainly used in this game- ‘Chamma’ and ‘Ashta’. When all the shells land as it is, it is called ‘Ashta’. And when all the shells land downwards then it is called ‘Chamma’. Every player has four pawns. The player whose pawns reach the central square first wins the game. It is also known as ‘Katte Mane’ in Kannada, Atthu in Hindi, and Daayam in Tamil.

 

These are some of the games that are faded away with time. Others include Kite Fighting and Well of Death. Both of these games are banned in India. Because they were harmful to the public.

 

Current status of sports in India

The government of India in 2018 launched the Khelo India School Games. It was later renamed as Khelo India Youth Game. It was started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to encourage the youth to play sports. It has two categories- Under-17 and Under-21. It is an annual event held in January and February. It has 20 different national level sports including Kabaddi and Kho-Kho. 1000 best performers are given scholarships by the government for the next 8 years. It encourages the youth to participate in sporting events.

It is named after Maharaja Umaid Singh. He is the grandfather of the present owner Gaj Singh. In the year 1971, he decided to convert a part of this palace into a hotel. The palace consisting of 347 rooms is divided into three parts. First, a royal residence. Second, as a museum. And third, as a luxury hotel. The hotel is run by the Taj Group of Hotels. It is a complete blend of royalty and luxury. It has 64 rooms. They are divided into four categories- Grand Royal Suite, Historical Suite, Maharaja Suite, and Maharani Suite. It has a squash court where you can enjoy your leisure time. You can also have a ride in a vintage car. Bollywood celebrity Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas tied the knot in The Umaid Bhawan Palace in 2018. Mehrangarh Fort, Bishnoi Village, and Jain Mahavira Temple are some places you can visit nearby.

 

2. Rambagh Palace, Jaipur

Rambagh palace was built in 1835 by Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob. Kesar Badaran, handmaiden of Maharani Gayatri Devi lived here. It was renamed as ‘Rambagh Palace’ after Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II. It became the permanent residence of Maharaja of Jaipur in 1925. After independence, it became Raj Bhavan (Government House). It was in 1957 that this palace was converted into a hotel. It was managed by the Royal family of Jaipur till 1972. After that, it is managed by the Taj Group of Hotels. It is known as ‘Jewel of Jaipur’ It has 79 rooms that are categorized as Luxury and Palace Suite, Historical Suite, Royal Suite, Grand Royal Suite and Grand Presidential Suites. For dining, it has three options. Suvarna Mahal, where you can enjoy Indian cuisine. The Rajput Room, a multi-cuisine restaurant and The Verandah. It also has a mini-golf course inside it. 3. Lake Palace, Udaipur

Lake Palace in Udaipur is spread in an area of 4 acres. It is located on an island in the middle of Pichola lake. Maharaja Jagat Singh II built this palace in 1746. It has majestic architecture. It has 83 rooms categorized as Luxury rooms, Palace rooms, Royal suites, Grand Royal Suites, and Shambhu Prakash suites. They provide you three dining options. Jharokha, for informal dining offering multi cuisines. Neel Kamal for fine dining offering Rajasthani cuisine. And Amrit Sagar, a stylish bar serving vintage wine and cigar. 5. Gajner Palace, Bikaner

Gajner Palace is spread in 6000 acres. It was the Summer Palace of Sir Ganga Singhji. He was one of the Maharajas who ruled Bikaner in the first half of the 20th century. Later it became a hunting resort for Britishers. Prince of Wales, Governor-General Lord Elgin, Lord Ervin and, Viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten has also stayed in this hotel. In 1922 it was connected to rail. It has 13 Historic suites and 32 Deluxe rooms. It is divided into four wings. Dungar Niwas, containing all the suites. Mandir Chowk, it has the reception area. In 1821, it became the official residence of British Resident Political Officer of Rajputana. In 1958, Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II made it his private residence. VIPs like Queen Elizabeth II, Duke of Edinburgh, Jackie Kannedy, prince of Wales, Princess Diana, and many others. 7. Balsamand Lake Palace, Jodhpur

Balsamand Lake Palace was built in the 17th century by Maharaja Jaswant Singh I of Jodhpur. It is spread in an area of 60 acres. It has traditional Rajputana architecture. It is located near an artificial lake. This lake was built in the 13th to provide drinking water to the residents of the area. It is also known as the Monsoon Palace. It has 26 Garden Rooms, 9 Regal Suite, and 1 Maharani suite facing the lake. It gives you five dining options- Garden restaurant, Kebab corner, Bar Lounge, Lake View restaurant, Theme dinner (on request). You can do cycling, Royal horse Buggy riding, Horse riding, Horse safari, and Village Safari.

 

8. Devigarh Palace, Udaipur

Devigarh Palace is built at the Aravalli hills in the 18th century. Rajrana Sajja Singh and his brother Ajja Singh were awarded this Palace for their bravery and loyalty in the Battle of Haldighati. In 1999, it was restored and reopened as a heritage hotel. It has 23 rooms. They are categorized as Garden Suite, Palace Suite, Aravalli Suite, and Devigarh Suite. For dining, it has a restaurant, Darbar Courtyards, Hawa Gokra, Janana Courtyard, Phool Bagh, Sheesh Mahal, and Silver Lounge. 9. Laxmi Niwas Palace, Bikaner
