Moksha, Vimoksha, or Vimukti are different Hindi terms for Salvation. In simple terms, it means getting free from the cycle of birth and death. After an individual dies, it is believed that it takes birth in another form. But if the soul attains moksha (salvation) then it is free and it does not take birth again. The holy city of Varanasi has two hotels where people check-in to die. Yes, you heard it right. These places are known for attaining salvation. People who are unable to perform their routine activities come and live in these places.

 

1. Mumukshu Bhawan (Moksha Bhawan)

Mumukshu Bhawan commonly known as Moksha Bhawan is located in Uttarkashi near Assi Ghat. This home of salvation was established in 1920. It is at a distance of 400 meters from Uttarkashi bus stand. It was spread in an area of five acres when it was built. It has 55 rooms in total. It has two, three, and four-bedded rooms.

 

A nominal cost is charged from the people coming to live here. Built for attaining moksha. Now, this place has built more rooms for wedding functions and for the pilgrims to raise funds for the smooth functioning of the Bhawan.

 

People from India and abroad are allowed to come and live here. But people living in Varanasi are not allowed here.

Kashi Labh Mukti Bhawan was constructed in 1908. This building was owned by Hari Ram Goenka. Later in 1958, it was bought by Jai Dayal Dalmia of Dalmia Charitable Trust. It is a double-storeyed 12 room ashram. Like the Mumukshu Bhawan, this place is also known for attaining salvation. Initially, many people used to visit here to get moksha. But now most of the rooms remain empty. All the facilities are made available free of cost to the people living here. It costs only twenty rupees for electricity.

 

A room is provided to a person only for two weeks. If the person does not die during this period then he has to vacate the room. But according to the manager of kasha Labh Mukti Bhawan, this period can increase in some special cases. He has seen around 15000 people attaining salvation in front of his eyes. The Bhawan also has the records of all the people who have died here. It also has a priest and temple inside it. Every morning, their day starts with a three-hour-long pooja. Ramayana and Mahabharata are constantly read here. The day comes to an end with Satyanarayan arti in the evening.

 

Current Status of these Home of Salvation

Although people who truly believe in the concept of Moksha still visit here. But nowadays an increase in the number of people coming to die than witness the beauty of Varanasi is affecting the reputation of the city. It is said that today’s fast track generation will never understand this concept. But people who still believe in it love to take their last breath in this holy city.

With no internet, no GPS, no other forms of worldly pleasures the himalayan nomads known as Changpas start their day with the red and less warm rays of the sun in the sky and end their day with multiple stars shining over their tents of yak-skin in Ladakh, the union territory in India. They may less know in the world but their goat wool is world popular to manufacture original piece of pashmina shawls.

 

Changpas nomads live in the valleys of Tso Moriri, Rupshu, Kharnak and Hanley, of Ladakh. They live on very high altitudes, where snowfall is a common site to witness even during the summers. They prefer to migrate from one place to another in search of green pastures for their herds of Changthangi goats (finest quality of cashmere wool) in short span of summers. They mostly believe in remaining at one place during the long lasting winters.

 

Tracing the culture of Changpas community

It is said that these Changpas have migrated themselves from Tibet to Hanla Valley in Ladakh in around 8^th century AD. They were particularly known as the ancient people of the northern part as they hailed from the North of Lhasa. They are followers of Dalai Lama and practice Buddhism. They generally have many monasteries and festivals, in which they despite being nomadic participate in. In Korzok festival, women dressed in traditional phreak, (a type of headgear) dance and enjoy them to the fullest. It is a delight to watch the festival; the Changpas tribe is a great source of attraction there.

 

They practiced the barter system in earlier years where goods were exchanged for goods. The barter system is still in use by some people of the community. They were polyandrous i.e. multiple brothers married the same woman, but this practice is now no longer practiced. They speak in a tone which is somewhat a mixture of Tibetan and Ladakh.

 

About the routine, living and discipline of Changpas

The people of this tribe usually live together in a tent called ‘rebu.’ The rebu is made by the yak’s wool. For this the yak wool is spun by the families together, woven and then stitched. The rebuses are attached to the ground by the wooden posts. They protect the people from the extreme situations of cold, snowfall and icy winds.

The Changpas tribe also rear other animals like yak and sheep. The family divides the work in them. The elderly women usually do the milking and participate in the process of making diary products, the young girls usually take the herds for grazing in the field and men usually shear the animals and sell animal products.

 

After their busy day, the family sits together to have dinner sometimes that is also a luxury for them with fruits, some staples of barley and dried yak meat. With less food and more of hard work they are always seen satisfied, happy and in peace.

 

The Changpas tribe has a leader common to every four units of families, known as ‘goba.’ The goba is like the ‘surpanch’ in the panchayat. Goba must be wise, intellectual, experienced and being elderly is a necessary point. The goba is elected by the people.

 

Changpas Fighting the wild – Warriors of Himalayas

Living in the wild, in altitudes is a difficult task for people who usually live in normal terrain regions with all the comforts of life. The Changpas tribe therefore, have adapted to survive in the oddest conditions with temperature almost in minus degrees and animals which are hard to tame.

 

They survive all the wild winds, heavy snowfall, thunder currents and safe themselves from animals like red fox, kiangs, blue sheeps and all the kind of wild and high altitude birds and fowls. They have proven themselves as warriors in the Himalayan region and continue being the same by being happy, contented, and hard-working at the same time.

 

Source of Income for Changpas tribe

People living in these high altitude places make money mainly from various animals and their products. Yak, sheep and goats are the major source of income for the people there.

The Pashmina, a type of cashmere wool from which some of the finest shawls are produced comes from the Changthangi goats also known as ‘Pashmina goats.’ The Changpas pet these goats and by shearing them they become the main suppliers of greatest cashmere wool in India and also in world. Changpas approximately supply 40,000 kgs of Pashmina, tonnes of another variety of wools.

 

Pashmina is produced by the Changthangi goat’s undercoat. The soft undercoat grows in size in extreme winters and they are sheared in the early springs by the Changpas men.

 

The sheep and goats graze at an altitude of 4,500 meters. When they return after 5-6 hours of grazing, the females are separated and are milked. The milk and the milk products are other ways of income or barter for these Changpas, especially cheese.

 

Changpas coping with climate change

The pictures of Ladakh’s Nomads and the future of Pashmina Wool seems to be gloomy as climate change rolling down rapidly in the Himalayan region. This change is affecting the production of silky-soft and super-expensive Pashmina. Living at the altitude of 16,400 feet, life for them has become drier in summers and harsher in winters pushed them to leave their nature home and abandon their age old nomadic traditions.

It is believed that to get pure pashmina from the fine undercoat of a breed of Himalayan goat, the animals requires certain climatic atmosphere which is only found to be at Changpa’s homeland. Currently, due to less number of Changpas community is in the business, there is a huge shortage in the market making pashmina wool more expensive. This shortage has led to the fake Pashmina imports from Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and China.

Located in the North Eastern state of Assam, Kaziranga National Park was established in 1908. It is governed by the Government of Assam and Government of India. It is spread in 430 square kilometers area. It is a world heritage site. It is a home for two-third of one-horned rhinoceros in the World. It was declared a tiger reserve in 2006. It has elephants, wild water buffalo and swamp deer in large numbers. The best time to visit Kaziranga National Park is between November to March.

2. Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh

This national park is located in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh. It was established in 1968. It is governed by Madhya Pradesh Forest Department. In 1993, it was declared as a tiger reserve. Spread in 1536 square kilometers area, it is home to a large population of leopards. Deer, butterflies, reptiles, and tigers can also be found here. This national park derived its name from the famous hillock of the area. This hillock was used by Lakshamana (Lord Rama younger brother) to keep an eye on Lanka. The best time to visit this national park is between November and March.

 

3. Hemis National Park, Jammu and Kashmir

Hemis National park is located in one of the finest tourist destinations in India. It is located on a high altitude in Leh district in Ladakh. It was established in 1981. It is governed by the Government of India, Government of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council. It is spread in an area of 4400 square kilometers. Snow Leopard is the most found species here. Tibetan Wolf, Eurasian brown bear, Asiatic Ibex, and some other endangered species in India can also be found here. The best time to visit Hemis National Park is between January to March.

4. Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand

One of the oldest national parks in India is Jim Corbett National Park. It is located in Nanital and Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. It was established in 1936 to protect Bengal Tiger. It is governed by Project Tiger, Government of Uttarakhand, Wildlife Warden, and Jim Corbett National Park. It has a vast variety of birds and animals. It contains 488 different species. The best time to visit this national park is between November to February.

The Gajan Festival is one of the thrilling and exciting festivals which is usually performed in rural areas of West Bengal, a state in eastern India but it is also practiced in some parts of metropolitan city Kolkata which is also famous for its colorful and unique festivals.  The participants of this festival are known as ‘sannyasi’ or ‘Bhokta.’ These devotees believe that by piercing their bodies with iron rods and hooks on their back can impress the Gods, especially ‘Shiva-the God of Gods’ (“Deb’er deb-Mohadeb”). They believe that through remarkable spectacle of human strength and devotion one can achieve satisfaction through non-sexual pain and sacrifice.

The unique festival is usually associated with Hindu deities Shiva, Neel, Dharmathakur. The festival lasts for three days and ends with ‘Charak Puja.’ The celebration of the festival begins from the mid-April. It starts mainly on the last two days of the month of Chaitra, just before the ‘Poila Boishak’(Bengali New Year).

Believes behind Gajan Festival

What makes West Bengal different from other states is that pre-vedic era still exists, survive and flourish in its land. People here are still connected with their mythological stories and still believe in them. The origin is connected with the fact of conversion of Buddhist monks to Hinduism. The gajan festival was known as ‘Dharmer Gajan’ when it was performed in the Buddhist community. Later when it was adopted in Hindu culture, it came to be known as ‘Shiber Gajan.’ It is believed that the tantric rituals of Hinduism and the thought of monasticism of Buddhism have led to the emergence of this colorful festival ‘gajan.’

 

It is believed that on the day of ‘gajan’ festival Lord Shiva is married to Harakali.  The all three day festival is formed by the devotees signifying the marriages of the three powerful Gods, Shiva, Nil, and Dharamaraj.

Significance of Gajan Festival

This festival is performed by the devotees for good rains and better harvest. This is performed mainly by agricultural community and God Dharmathakur is mainly worshipped by various scheduled tribes such as bauri, bagdi, har and Dom. When they perform the various acts of piercing they are respected by all and they are then put above in status by the landlords. Even landlords pay tribute to them. People worship God Dharmathakur because he is considered as ‘God of Fertility’ by them. The gajan festival is also celebrated to bring prosperity and to eliminate sorrow and sufferings from each devotee’s life.

Painful rituals practiced by the devotees

Various rituals are performed by the people in order to bestow good health and best luck. The devotees perform the festival by piercing their bodies through iron rods. Dancing with human skull is also common in Kurmun village at Bardhaman district.

 

The devotees pierce their mouths with multiple iron rods that are thin and long. Money is offered to them which are pinned in their bodies through safety pins. The practiced of piercing is usually done by some old monks who have mastered this act since years. They know how to insert the rods into the skin without damaging the veins and preventing excessive bleeding.  

 

Fire plays and various fire rituals are important in the festive celebration. It is believed that God of Fire is the eternal life giver and destroyer too. Fire acts can be seen in villages like Gurudasnagar. Fairs are also a common site to witness during the three days of the prestigious festive.

 

In some another village the men who perform the piercing are taken around the village in crucified form. Hands are usually tied and big iron rods are pierced in the skin. Weak-hearted tourists are not advised to witness these practices.

Why acts of piercing are performed?

The super-believers believe that the acts such as piercing would let them know the real pain of womanhood. They believe that by doing this they can reverse the role and feel the emotions and the pain a woman goes through her entire life especially during the childbirth.

 

Other reason is that the people of the agricultural community believe that they give immense pain to the soil (which they regard as their mother) during the acts of ploughing and harvesting. Thus, the devotees perform these acts to feel and experience the same amount of pain.

Extreme piercing: This year the Gajan festival to appease Shiva did not take place due to coronavirus lock-down – perhaps for the first time in thousands of years.

Kalire

Banaras or Varanasi, a city in India which is famous for its extraordinary blessings by the holy Hindu deities is a place which every Indian should visit in their lifetime to make their life blessed and free of sins before going to the Almighty’s house. Banaras is a city located on the banks of river Ganga, in Uttar Pradesh. It is seen as one of the biggest religious hub of the country. This article would explain briefly about the historically very famous pond located in the heart of city blesses people with child and cures leprosy and washes their sins. The Lolark Kund in Varanasi is another sacred site in the most ancient city. It has the blessings of both Lord Shiva and the Solar deity, and many people visit this site to get boons.

The Epic story behind Lolark Kund of Varanasi

It is mentioned in the Kashi Skhand (one of the seven sections of Skhand Puran) that lord Shiva sent God Sun (Surya) to Varanasi as emissary to bless the place with energy, vitality, virility, and purity after the decline of the 13^th century. Surya in order to complete his duty divided himself into 12 parts known as “Adityas” (holy sons of Aditi and Prajapati) and settled and established each part in the whole space of Varanasi. Although Hindu calendar is based on lunar eclipse, later the 12 suns where identified in the months of the solar calendar. It is believed that Lolark is one of the ‘Adityas.’

 

There is another story related to Lolark. It is said that Kina Ram has blessed an infertile Brahmin woman with three children in this place during the Lolark Chath after being impressed by woman’s prayers. It (Lolark kund) was known as Kirmi Kund in Kina’s ashram then.

 

Due to these attributes of the place from the two powerful Gods Lolark is considered as a centre in Hindu mythology where thousands of pilgrims get together to pay tribute to them (the Gods) and witness the power. Some devotees come here to marry Lord Shiva, this signifies a symbol of sexual union.

The Lolark Kund : A sacred pond with many boons of curing leprosy including child

The Lolark Kund is located in south Varanasi, near Tulsi Ghat. This holy kund is considered as one of the earliest worship site in all of Banaras. The Lolark is named after the deity who is believed to have blessed this place, Lord Shiva’s “Lolarkeshwara.” Some believe that it is named after the nomenclature of Lord Sun. The Kund is regarded as a sacred place which is known for curing people of leprosy and blessing women who are incapable of conceiving a child with a baby.

Unique Architecture of Lolark Kund

The very steep stairs surround the pond from the four sides. The water is 60 feet deep and it is believed that the holy water comes from ‘Pataal Lok.’ There are chances of many mishappenings at the bay due to very steep staircases. In order to prevent the accidental mishaps in the place during the other months of the year, it is protected and covered by the shield.  The side facing the east is marked by a long and an arched wall that allows the holy rays of the Sun to enter and bless the water.

 

With the reflection of sun in the holy water the people establish a connection between their belief and the stories behind this sacred place. People believe His powers are infused with the water.

Activities Performed by Devotees at Lolark Kund

Thousands of pilgrims and childless couples come to Lolark Kund to take the holy bath here to get rid of their already done sins. They take dip in the holy water or sprinkle it over themselves. Hoards of married couple wish for a child most preferably a son but in some cases they believe a daughter can do as well in raising their empire. After taking the dip people usually leave their clothes in water as a remembrance. Fruits and vegetables are also left in the tank. Gold jewelry is also left sometimes in the water for the offerings to the Mahants and Brahmins for organizing the enormous event with lakhs of devotees.

 

A colorful scenario is created in the place where people from all age group can be witnessed. After taking the holy bath women prepare cuisines in the open camp fire and distribute them to other devotees as ‘Prasad.’ It is believed that God Surya hardly disappoints the people who come here.

 

The couples, who are blessed with a child, usually visit this place an year after, where the child’s head is tonsured and the hair is dedicated and is offered to God Surya as a token of thanks. Thus, only one reason causes them to assemble in this social gathering, ‘the same believe.’

1. The Maharajas’ Express

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) in March 2010 started this luxury train in India. It is the most expensive luxury trains that run in India. It runs across 12 destinations in India covering most of Rajasthan. It runs between October to April.

 

2. Palace on Wheels 

It started in the year 1982 by Indian Railways This train cover Jaipur, Madhopur, Chittorgarh, Agra, and several other destinations. It starts and ends its journey in Delhi. Its coaches are made like those in the Colonial era. It costs around Three lakhs Indian rupees per person for a single journey.

 

3. Royal Rajasthan on Wheels

This train started a year before the Maharajas’ Express. This train also takes its passenger on a royal journey to the royal state of Rajasthan. This train is also owned by Indian Railways. It has 14 cabins in total. It is the most affordable train among all other luxury trains.

 

4. The Golden Chariot

This train was started in 2008 by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC). This train runs in various popular destinations of South India like Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It costs approximately 2 lakhs per person for a single journey.

 

5. The Deccan Odyssey

Based on the model of Palace on the wheel this luxury train was started in 2004. It was started to increase the tourism in Maharashtra. This train is operated by both Indian Railways and Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC). Its journey starts and in Mumbai. In between it covers Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Goa, Aurangabad, Ajanta-Ellora Nasik, Pune, and returns to Mumbai.
