The Hindu mythology believes that when the ocean was churned there was a war going on between the Devas (Gods) and Asuras (Demons) for becoming immortal, elephant was one of the nine jewels to be surfaced. Since then, the animal is of great importance to human both in terms of holiness and survival. It is considered as the important cultural icon in Hinduism from then onwards. But the cruel actions of the most intelligent beings on earth have made the existence of these giant species difficult. Their status has reduced to endangered species and the population has declined from a million to less than 50,000.  Therefore, making it a huge problem to worry about.

NATURE OF ASIAN ELEPHANTS

Considered as the largest land mammal of the Asian continent, Asian elephants are common in dry and wet forests or grasslands. These elephants form herds which are small in size and are led by the oldest female, the matriarch. They are basically crepuscular i.e. they sleep during the day and are active during the dusk or dawn. They have highly developed neocortex which is mostly responsible for their intelligence and altruism.

THREATS TO ASIAN GIANTS

Declared endangered by IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature), the population of Asian giants have reduced by 50% over the past 75 years and it is estimated that 20,000-40,000 are only left.

 

Asia, one of the populous continents on earth where development and economic growth is the main concern, is facing a great danger when it comes to its wildlife. The humans are not sparing animals or their homes for the sake of their own benefit and money. The main threat to elephants is the loss of habitat and fragmentation from deforestation, agricultural development and various other human activities.

WHY THEY MATTER ?

The large giants are important in this vast continent because they maintain the integrity of forests and grassland habitats. Their large size helps in the creation of pathways along which they travel and thus creates access to other wildlife. 

HUMAN – ELEPHANT CONFLICT

The decades have seen the ongoing conflict between the humans and the largest land mammals in the world. Humans poach elephants for ivory of male elephants. Illegal ivory market exists for which around 30,000 elephants are poached each year mainly in Africa. The ivory is used for making jewelry and various types of useful medicines.

 

In Asia, the giants are trafficked from Myanmar into Thailand. The trunk of elephants with finger like structure at the end (one in Asian elephants and two in African) is also used in many things and is another reason for the poaching and hunting of elephants.

 

Asian elephants live in captivity. Phajaan, a ritual in which the elephants are tied from the ropes and are tamed using fear-based method with an instrument known as bullhook (a wooden stick with a sharp metal hook at the end) is widely practiced in the Asian subcontinent. The elephant from the young age is tied from the rope and is manipulated in such a way that he couldn’t open the rope. When he grows his mind already accepts the fact that he couldn’t open the rope and hence he obeys his master’s orders.

 

Elephants living outside protected areas are prone to danger because of the expanding human settlements, plantations, farming, mining (road, railways). With shrinking forests and unavailability of food, elephants march towards crop land from forest land and then they indulge in what is called crop raiding, which brings them in direct conflict with the humans, often resulting in deaths of both the man the elephant. In a fraction of second, the large giants become ‘nuisance’ from ‘deities.’

 

The present Kerala case where a pregnant elephant died due to consuming a pineapple which was full of crackers is an example of how human beings are cruel to the innocent beings.

 

Logging industry, agriculture and occasionally in warfare, Asian elephants are used. In tourism, the elephants are trained to perform shows, rides and interact closely and friendly with tourists.

 

India, Vietnam and Myanmar have banned capture in order to conserve their wild herds. But illegal capture still exists. (CITES) – 1989, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna has banned the international trade in ivory, skin, tail hair and meat.

 

Preservation, Restoration and Expansion of Wildlife Corridors In India.

The International Elephant Foundation (IEF) selects 27 global projects to receive the conservation and research grants to show the dedication to conserve the African and Asian Elephants worldwide. The various government initiatives like Project Tiger, Project Elephant, and Project Crocodile Conservation are all aiming at the same target, ‘to save wildlife.’

 

Asia’s largest vertebrate require living space, food and water, thus they have to be protected. Maintaining elephant corridors is therefore of crucial importance.

 

As per the study released in 2017 by Wildlife Trust of India in their report ‘Right of Passage,’ traces that there are 101 elephant corridors pan India. Out of these 101 corridors, 28 are located in the Southern region of India, 25 in Central region of India, 23 in Northeastern region of India, 14 in Northern West Bengal and 11 in Northwestern India.

 

Every two in three elephant corridors in the country are affected by agricultural activities. A large extent of corridor area is also being lost due to encroachment. About 58.4% corridors fall under settled cultivation and 10.9% under jhum (slash and burn) cultivation.

 

Conservation is therefore an achievement only if locals are also involved in the process.

PRESENT SCENARIO

Today as our world is changing both physically and technologically, it is very important to take a moment to reflect and reinvent our relationship with the existing elephants.

Exports of crafts including handmade carpets up to October 2014 were Rs. 17265.11 crores, which indicated an rise of 23.16 per cent over the same period in the 2013-14 financial year, and the allocation schedule for 2014-15 was Rs. 247.00 crore.

DEVELOPMENT OF INDUSTRY 

The center / state government has initiated numerous schemes to encourage and prosper the handicrafts sector:

 

1. Artisan Credit Card (ACC) Scheme: Indian Banks Association (IBA) has introduced a scheme to provide the Artesian women with timely and sufficient credit. This scheme will take advantage of both the rural and the industrial businessmen.
2. Research and Development Scheme (R&D): This scheme is specifically aimed at solving the problems faced by the artisans with specific equipment, raw materials, construction, working conditions etc.
3. Human Resources Development Scheme (HRD): The purpose of this scheme is to provide artisans with training facilities to support the handicrafts industry.
4. Design and Technology Up-gradation Scheme (DTUS): This program includes the National Award for Outstanding Contribution in the Handicrafts Industry, Financial Support to State Initiatives, including Design Centers, Design Banks and Museums, Information, Conservation and Restoration of Rare and Languishing Crafts, National Award for Outstanding Contribution in the Handicrafts Industry.

The long-term government deal between Indian and Soviet Union allowed companies to sell woolen knitwear to the Soviet Union. Huge quantities of poor quality and low-cost products have been sold into the market. The knitwear producers from Ludhiana exported more than half of their overall output.

VARIETY OF PRODUCTS 

Ludhiana apparel industry diversified its products to winter jackets. In the mid 2000s, as the domestic demand for woolen knitwear and winter jackets expanded exponentially, the major outlet moved from export to domestic market.

 

The research by the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) explains the present conditions of knitwear industry in Ludhiana (AEPC 2009). Ludhiana nearly monopolizes manufacturing winter wear for the region. In Ludhiana, about 95 per cent of India’s woolen and acrylic knitwear items are made.

 

Products from the Woollen industry are made mainly from wool and mixed yams. Such products include woolen shirts, pullovers, cardigans, slipovers, hats, boots, storages, tops, trousers, drawers, knee tops, mufflers, gloves, balacalva caps, jackets, ski jackets, etc.

 

The city’s woollen sector exports at least 30 percent of the products produced while 70 percent are exported around the country.

EMPLOYMENT

There are about 10,000 to 12,000 units including units for spinning , weaving, sewing, chemical manufacturing, and clothing. 2,500 plants are export- and domestic clothing production facilities. Between them, there are 100 units of large scale with more than 125 sewing machines, 700 medium size units with 40 to 125 sewing machines, 1,700 small size units with less than 40 sewing machines. Along with clothing manufacturers, 6,000 units receive job work such as sewing, weaving, embroidery, and patching. 200 Fabric processing units. There are actually very few export focused systems.

 

Since the export share in Ludhiana’s overall turnover is only 20 per cent, domestic market is more important than export. The primary and indirect jobs of about 350,000 to 400,000 people in the apparel industry in Ludhiana. Local employment is smaller as much of their work is outsourced to nearby subcontractors. Producers tend to contractually hire staff to avoid paying their employees for the provident fund and the employee’s state benefits plan.

ECONOMY

Ludhiana is Punjab’s economic hub, and it accounts for almost 90 per cent of the woolen hosiery industry in the country. The rising profits in this sector are luring more and more companies to make a debut in this field. In the knitwear sector it’s nearly 7000 to 10,000 crore rupees industry. Every year Hosiery garments worth around Rupees 2000 crore are exported from Ludhiana which is a big income for both the state and the region. It is estimated that the overall installed production of Ludhiana hosiery products is about 5000 crore, of which almost 1000 crore worth of goods are exported.

 

DEVELOPMENT

Participation in the Ludhiana Knitwear cluster was aimed at resolving inadequate human capital endowment, limited foreign business linkages, and reacting to a declining domestic sector, low competition rates and limited institutional structure.

 

Punjab Apparel Park, a joint venture between PSIEC (Punjab Small Industry and Export Corporation Ltd.) and APPEAL (Apparel Promoters and Exporters Association of Ludhiana), is a Special Purpose Venture (SPV) founded by the Textile Ministry, Govt. India’s plan for business facilitation involves services such as excise duty and registration fee exemption, income tax, continuous power supply, single window clearance etc.

The long-snouted Gharials which are commonly found in the northern Indian subcontinent were edge of making it to the extinct category but made an impressive comeback in Chambal River. These creatures are classified as ‘critically endangered species. And with effective government policy under Wild Life Protection, the National Chambal Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh has made long-snouted Gharial comeback in Chambal river.

 

About the Gharials of Chambal

The Gharial is a fish-eating crocodile and is among the longest of all the living crocodiles. They have a distinct feature at the end of their snout, which resembles an earthenware pot known as ‘ghara’ and hence they are named as ‘Gharial.’ The Gharials are famous for catching fishes with their long, thin snouted nose and 110 interlocking and strong teeth. The females are usually 8 ft. – 14 ft. and the matured males are generally 9 ft. – 19 ft.

 

Gharials love to live in the water but come out of it only for basking and building nests on the moist sandbanks where they can hatch their eggs.  The adult female every year lay around 20-95 eggs.

 

Gharials are old animals and were even there in Indus Valley. The people of the valley regarded the animal as mystical and used some of its body parts as ingredients of much useful indigenous medicine.

 

Claimed as ‘Critically Endangered’

The fish-eating Gharials due to their diminishing number were classified as ‘critically endangered,’ by IUCN (The International Union for Conservation of Nature) in 2007. Their number has increased from 905 in 2012 to 1,896 in 2019. In the month of June and July of last year more than 5,000 Gharials were born at the National Chambal Sanctuary, located on the borders of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Around 4,141 Gharials were hatched from eggs and 1,202 were born with nested methods.

 

Threats to their Existence

IUCN (The International Union for Conservation of Nature) says that the threats on the living and existing Gharials are known, continuous and irreversible. The various extension activities and water control methods increased the disturbances by human beings on the river banks.

 

The various reasons like loss of habitat by siltation, sand mining and conversion to agriculture, barrages, dams, irrigation canals, artificial embankments depletion of fish resources and detrimental fishing methods continue to threaten the population of this very unique species.

 

Around 111 Gharials were found dead in the Chambal River between December 2007 and March 2008 which was suspected because of the illegal use of fishing traps and nets but later the post-mortem reports revealed the presence of heavy metals such as lead and cadmium, which together with stomach ulcers and protozoan parasites resulted in a disease known as necropsies, which ultimately caused their deaths.

 

As per the studies done, threats have been intensified since early 1950s, and still continue with increasing demand for river resources in International market.

 

Steps taken for Gharial Comebacks

The Gharial is listed on the CITIES Appendix 1. The Gharial is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 in India. Many breeding centres are established to remove the species from the red list.

 

The Chambal River is around 1,000 km long and it originates in Madhya Pradesh. With around 500 mature adults, National Chambal Sanctuary has the highest population of the long-snouted Gharials in the world. This is 77% of the global population of the species. Besides this the sanctuary also produces around 410 nests every year, which is 86% of the global total.

 

The sanctuary is spread within 5,500 km of area which includes three states Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The sanctuary also releases the mugger crocodiles into the river every year. Thus, the steps taken for the increase in the number of Gharials during the last year are appreciable and Chambal Sanctuary deserves all the credits. Hope the species is soon unmarked as ‘endangered.’

Overall annual sales of jewelry in India has crossed US $39 billion.The industry is the second highest foreign exchange earner in the Indian economy, accounting for nearly 15% of the country’s overall export earnings.

 

11 out of 12 diamonds are cut and polished in India. Diamonds mined in India constitute 55% of the world market in terms of interest, 80 percent in terms of cartage and 90 percent in volume.

According to the Permanent Register of SSI units in DIC, Kannur, in the 2010-11 district, only 36 cooperative weavers’ societies and 28 private handloom industrial units are registered and still involved in handloom production, and no credible data on the work of private handloom firms.

 

The district of Kannur is blessed with professional weavers, the essence of inherited weaving, the provision of low-cost women’s labor, the increasing role of cooperatives in the organized sector, the procurement of water and good quality. Each of these factors contributed significantly to the development of the handloom industry. In Kannur district, water purity is high, so the handloom weavers are able to manufacture handloom fabrics in bright colour.

 

ECONOMY

The total value of annual production at Kannur is estimated at 500 crores of rupees according to Kerala Handloom Exporters Organisation. With this, goods worth 250 crore of rupees are exported directly with Kannur manufactures and the rest are sold to vendors, some of whom are also exported. Exports from the district of Kannur have spread to over 25 major countries worldwide, the USA, and the EU countries being the main buyers of Kannur handloom products. Top market buyers favor Kannur as generations of owners have worked hard to maintain the ‘Best Value tag’ and most of the top units in the district of Kannur are ISO certified.

Development made in Kannur Handloom Industry

1. The Handloom Training Institute was established in Kannur under the Societies Registration Act. The institute’s goal is to conduct managing research and development activities.
2. The Kannur Weavers Service Center was set up, serves individual weavers and master weavers in Kerala Handloom Fabric Exporters.
3. Institute of Handloom and Textile Technology was founded at Thottada, Kannur to provide training in handloom production processes such as weaving, dyeing etc.
4. The headquarters of Kerala State Handloom Development Corporation (Hanveev) is also located in Kannur, as an agency to promote the handloom industry of the state through the distribution of raw materials and the marketing of goods.

 

Eight out of the country’s top 52 exporters are from Kannur district. Kannur is the only town in Kerala among the country’s 24 textile centres, identified by the Union’s Textile Ministry for supporting further growth in exports. Under Foreign Trade Policy, the government of India named Kannur the ‘Town of Export Excellence’ in 2004. This has elevated the status of Kannur handloom industry as it is the only town with such recognition from Kerala among the nine cities throughout the country.

With more than 80 different species of mangrove trees, the flora grows in regions where there is less oxygen in the soil and slow moving water. But due to the Amphan (cyclone) the Sunderbans in West Bengal are affected badly.

 

The mangrove flora includes all the types of shrubs, climbers, herbs and even wild green lives. They are of great importance to the mankind and have protected the humans from various dangers from water and other known threats.

 

The mangroves serve as friends to living beings and thus they must be protected. The government should take initiative for stepping into the techniques of more plantations of the mangrove trees.

 

The Natural Buffers of Environment and Dangers to Them

 

Spread with over 22 or more species in thousands hectares passing the 300 km of concrete embankments, the mangroves not only reduce the wind speed drastically but also break the waves during the storm.

 

Pichavaram mangroves that can be found in shrinking Cauvery delta in Tamil Nadu act as the modest and natural carbon sink in the winter season. The trees store carbon underground. If these trees are degraded the stored carbon will be lost. Various factors affect the carbon-storing potential and capacity of the mangroves which include changes in temperature, rainfall, salinity and freshwater.

 

The large mangrove forests are known as the sinks for carbon and also the sources of various greenhouse gases like methane, nitrous-oxide. But according to various experts, researchers, and environmentalists the carbon sink capability of the mangrove forests may decline in the future because of the rising temperature, changes in tidal patterns, variations in salinity, decreasing rainfall, deforestation and lackness of freshwaters.

 

The Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) will be affected badly for an 8-lane Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway. Thus, the result is that for creating artificial infrastructures the natural carbon sinkers are destroyed every year. The mangroves buffer the vulnerable coastlines from several years when it was built over 10,000 years ago with over 80 tropical and sub-tropical mangroves.

 

Affect of Amphan on Sunderban Mangrove Belt in India

The Sunderbans mangrove belt stretches for about 10,000 sq. km across the coast of Bangladesh and India. Sunderbans forest is a complicated yet rich system of hundreds of rivers, centuries of history, millions of lives and abundance of biodiversity. Kalbaisakhi winds add to the terror tales among the folks.

 

The state of West Bengal has witnessed something like Amphan in a period of at least 100 years. Even one of the wish-fulfilling trees, kalpvriksha, ancient Olea cuspidate at the Indian Botanic Garden, Howrah, lied uprooted. Even the century old tree cannot withstand the vital force of Amphan. Thus, the tree is the metaphor for everything that has been lost in this dangerous cyclone on May 20, 2020 in the middle of the pandemic.

 

With Amphan not only the mangrove trees are lost but also the livelihood of people depended on the mangroves for their food and shelter has ended. The fishery, wildlife occupation has suffered a lot. Everything has to be started from scratch now.

 

The four blocks of western Sunderbans block near the landfall site – Sagar, Patharpratima, Namkhana, and Kakdwip are most damaged by the cyclone. The various embankments that were built to prevent the surging waves have all been collapsed.

 

Amphan has not only damaged the infrastructure in the middle of a pandemic but also has severely made people homeless and affected the livelihood and small businesses like honey collectors, fishermen, to a large extend.

 

Plans for Redevelopment

Recently Honorable Chief Minister of West Bengal Ms Mamta Banerjee has set up an ambitious target of planting 5 crore mangrove trees in the Sunderbans.

 

As the plans for restoration and redevelopment are made it is of much importance that as two countries we do not lose the sight of the ecological security of mangrove ecosystem. Sunderbans is at great risk so in this case both government and non-government institutions can lend help and can plan bio-plot technique of restoration together admist this never ending pandemic. By donating funds to the West Bengal government, to NGOs like DISHA, etc. one can help in the social cause and good doings.

The city is deeply steeped in the tradition of making glass useful and decorative objects. For decades, this city’s population has been engaged in this and the town has become synonymous with glassware. Today, it is India’s largest glassware manufacturing hub. Firozabad, with a population of 279,102, asserts that 75% of this population is directly or indirectly involved in the glass industry and has become known as “India’s Glass City.”

 

It is the only cluster in India that produces bangles and Cater for the whole bangle requirement. There are about 150 bangle-making and decoration units in the city that provide jobs for almost 50,000 families. A single bangle is expected to move through as many as 45 to 50 hands before turning it from a pure lump of glass into a piece of disposable Jewelry.

 

Firozabad cluster specializes in the manufacture of a range of unique items produced by hand. The cluster has easy access to skilled and trained workers. It is estimated that there are a thousand registered skilled artisans whose generations are engaged in the skillful tradition of making glassware.

 

Role of Glass Industry in Indian Economy

This town’s entire economy is dependent onto this industry. One can honestly say this city would never have been famous had it not been for glass.

 

Firozabad glass industry is India’s largest glass industry cluster with nearly 5-6lakh people directly employed and plenty more indirectly employed with this sector, accounting for about 70 percent of total glass production in the small sector in India. The cluster has a unique role consisting of Micro, Small and Medium units located in one place and capable of producing a variety of glass products ranging from art ware, chandeliers to multicolored bangles, generating more than Rs 2000 crore annual market.

Development of Firozabad Glass Industry

Despite the obvious success of the glass bangle industry in Firozabad, Indian government has taken some steps to bring growth to the glass industry. This initiative involves the establishment of a Center for Development of Glass Industry Production in Firozabad (CDGI, 2016) as a joint venture project between the Indian government , the United Nations Development Plan (UNDP), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Pradesh government.

 

Due to a clear lack of availability of the most modern technology, promotion and lack of product innovation / variation, Firozabad has failed to establish a strong reputation on the international market. Primitive technology is continually used in the melting, formation, and shaping of glass. And, obviously, the industry is lacking in investment. It needs to develop its infrastructure, conduct more robust marketing and brand building activities to be successful on the world market.

 

Atmanirbhar Bharat to Provide Huge Respite to Industry

To transform Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of a self-reliant India, an attempt will be made to promote Firozabad Glass products famous worldwide with the intention of vocalizing the local. The industry has been facing the brunt of Chinese imports since past several years. More than half of MSMEs have closed their age old manufacturing due to price competitiveness than Chinese products dumped in India at cheaper price. Firozabad glass industry is majorly a labor intensive sector which raises the product price naturally, however the quality of product differs than Chinese glass products.

 

The government under ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ would identify various sectors like Firozabad which are being killed by Chinese products and make them self-reliant by imposing anti-dumping duty and other measures under Foreign Trade Policy.
