How can Hot Air balloons be utilized for film & TV shooting in India?

Hot air balloons are one of the most sought out attraction on tourist place. One  can have bird’s eye view through this with the lack of movement and just surreal feeling of being in the sky. One can not feel any wind except for when the balloon climbs up and down and due to the air currents from different directions. These air balloons rides are available at various tourist places. Hot Air Ballooning in India is the most suitable platform for aerial photography and in the recent past the Indian film industry has been rapidly adopting Hot Air balloons for Film & TV Production.

Background Hot air balloons

hot air balloon rental in delhi india for film and tv production 4

On 19 October, 1783, the first tethered balloon flight went on board in Paris, France with the scientist Jean- François Pilâtre de Rozier and the manufacture managers, Jean-Baptiste Réveillon and Giroud de Villette. The first balloon was built by the brothers Joseph-Micheland Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier to generate buoyancy. Then on 21 November, 1783, the first flight with passengers was done.

In 1960, Ed Yost launched a balloon with new nylon envelope and propane burner system which was called as modern hot air ballooning. In the beginning, there was no basket and just a seat. But Yost and other enthusiasts developed the balloon which we use today. Hot air ballooning has been recognised as the safest air sport in aviation by Federation Aeronatique Internationale (FAI) as hot air balloon accidents are very rare.

Hot Air Balloons for aerial shooting:

hot air balloon rental in delhi india for film and tv production 2

Aerial photgraphy for Film & TV Production and Documentary have been prominent from ages. People have used various means for them like a helicopter. But hot air balloons have not become much popular in this field. You can get a lot many advantages while shooting in a hot air balloon.

  1. 360 degree view
  2. Wide amplitude in terms of altitude
  3. Remarkable stability
  4. No air movements
  5. Space for equipments
  6. Hard-to-reach terrain

And the list continues.

Some points to be noted while shooting:

  1. Limited space

In hot air balloons, there is a constraint when it comes to space. When you are deciding on your euipments and cameras, have a talk with the pilot beforehand so you can adjust everything in the balloon accordingly and can have remorseless shoot.

  1. Change in the light conditions

When you are in the balloon, you never know that how the weather changes or how you were expecting a shot and due to excessive or low lighting, you could not get the result. So, carry flash for fill. Use it on gel so as to balance the natural light. You need to be prepared for all the scenarios which might happen during your flight.

  1. Carry extra camera and equipments if possible

If you have enough space in the balloon to bring some extra equipments and a camera, then do carry them. As many a times, you need multiple shots from different directions. So you can be handy with them.

  1. Bring long lenses

As you are at a great height, you need long lens to have perfect shoot so that scene below you doesn’t look too miniscule.

‘Ghost Holi’ Played in Varanasi Amidst Burning Corpse and Flying Smoke

You must have heard about the Lathmar holi of Mathura. You must have also heard about Holi played with cow dung and mud. But have you heard about Holi playing with ashes with ghosts? Do not be surprised, you heard exactly that. Such a wonderful Holi is played in the cultural city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, India.

When special Holi Celebrated?

Ghost Holi' Played in Varanasi Amidst Burning Corpse (4)

Every year, on the second day of Rang Bhari Ekadashi, i.e. three days before Holi, Holi is played with ashes amidst burning corpses, flying smoke and in between life & death at Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi. Manikarnika Ghat, which is the major cremation ghat, is the only cremation place in the world that never gets quiet. Here, pyres keeps burning all the time.

Why is Holi celebrated with Corpse Ashes?

Ghost Holi' Played in Varanasi Amidst Burning Corpse (1)

According to the beliefs of Varanasi, Lord Shiva is married on the day of Mahashivaratri and the Ekadashi that falls after that is his Gauna (A Ceremonial where groom brings his wife from her father’s house to his home after she reaches puberty). On this day, they go to their in-laws and bid farewell to Goddess Parvati and bring them to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, which is known as Rangabhari Ekadashi. On that day they play Holi with Gods and Goddesses. The next day i.e. on Dwadashi, at 12 noon, everyone comes at Manikarnika Ghat to take a bath. After that Lord Shiva plays Holi with his beloved Gana, ghosts, vampires, snakes and all the creatures of the world. Devotees also celebrate Holi with God.

During this festival of Holi, cremations continue to burn in the crematorium, the atmosphere is echoed by the slogans of Har Har Mahadev. People throw corpse ashes to each other in place of color. People come here only in the afternoon. After bathing, worshiping and about 25 minutes of aarti (Worship ceremony), Chita Bhasma (corpse ashes) and Gulal (organic colors) celebrate each other by celebrating Holi till late evening. In the form of Prasad (Gods offerings), devotees offer Thandai and cannabis to lord Shiva.

It is also believed that after this day, Bholenath (Lord Shiva’s other name) also allows the people of Banaras to perform a Holi festival. Just after this, the entire city is immersed in the colors of Holi for 4 days. Somewhere there is an echo of Damru (small two-headed drum, used in Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism), and somewhere people are seen chanting and singing on the beat of the drum.

Film Shooting at Taj Mahal: A Symbol of India’s Pride and Love

The Taj Mahal is considered as a symbol of India’s pride & love. Agra, 3rd important district of Uttar Pradesh, is historically very important. Being the favorite city of the Mughals, they made Agra their capital before Delhi.

According to history, Ibrahim Lodi established the city in 1504. At the time when this city was founded, no one would have imagined that this city would be waving the glory for its beauty all over the world, and Taj Mahal would be considered among Seven Wonders of the World.

Amazing History of Taj Mahal

history of taj mahal film shooting

Taj is located at a distance of about 200 km from Delhi. To construct it, an artisan was called from Baghdad who could carve the curved letters on the stone. Similarly, the artisan called from Bukhara city, which is located in Central Asia, was skilled in polishing the flowers on the marble stone. Daksha artisans living in Istanbul, Turkey were called to build domes of great stature and Daksha artisans were summoned from Samarkand to build minarets.

Thus, in the six months before the construction of the Taj Mahal, skilled artisans were carved out of which 37 skilled artisans were assembled, under whose supervision twenty thousand laborers worked. The Marble stones used in the construction of the Taj Mahal were collected from the region of Makrana in western state of Rajasthan, many other types of precious stones and gems were collected from many countries such as Baghdad, Afghanistan, Tibet, Egypt, Russia, Iran, etc. and bought them at a very high price to built the Taj Mahal.

The outcome of the Mughal Emperor’s love & determination is ‘Taj Mahal’, is called the unsurpassed diamond of beauty. When you see this building above with a head raised, its carved roofs and walls are nothing short of a surprise. Its history is on the tongue of all the children that the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal in memory of his second wife Mumtaz Mahal.

The Taj Mahal built of white stones on the banks of river Yamuna, has made its mark not only in India, but across the world. Thousands of tourists & research scholars, enthusiast, beauty lovers and film makers from far off countries visit Taj Mahal to see the sign of love. After seeing the beauty of Taj Mahal bathed in milky moonlight, all the similes you give, all of them look dull.

Taj Mahal, a Hub for Film Shooting

film shooting at Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is not just a building but a living aloof love for the world. The poet Rabindranath Tagore called it a ‘tear on the cheek of eternity’. Talk about the film world, the magic of Taj Mahal is going on from Bollywood to Hollywood.

Prior to independence, in 1942, Shah Jahan and Mumtaz’s love interest was shown on the film screen as ‘Taj Mahal’, in which actress Suraiya appeared on the screen at the age of 12. It featured Shah Jahan as actor Muhammad Naseem. Since then, more than 300 films have been shot at the Taj.

In the film ‘Taj Mahal’ in 1963, actors Pradeep and Bina Roy played memorable roles of Shah Jahan-Mumtaz. Roshan’s music gave a new voice to the unique stones. After this, the magic of Taj was such that Taj was suited for the romantic scene. Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan also performed under the crown with Bunty and Babli in Stranger.

Hollywood film Victoria & Abdul, Slumdog Millionaire, Bollywood film Youngistan, Ek Deewana Tha, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Bhoomi, Tevar, Wah Taj, Jan Nisar, Delhi-6, Tera Jadoo Chala Gaya, Scorpion, Dhai Aakhar Prem Ka, Bunty Aur South Indian film director Bharatha Raja with Babli, Tere Naam, Bhagat Singh, Jeans, Taj Mahal, Bewafa, Taj Mahal-A Value of Love, Chal Chala Chal, Pyar Deewana Hota, Taj Mahal, Stranger, Yamla-Pagla-Divana, Hot Air The Tamil film ‘Taj Mahal’ was shot by actor Vikram’s film Sami Square at Taj Mahal.

Not only the film, but in many songs, the Taj Mahal is specially shown as a sign of love. The song ‘Suno na Sangarmar.’ from the film ‘Youngistan’ is overshadowed. This song by Arijit Singh was very much liked by the youth. Ishq Rishik in ‘Mere Brother Ki Dulhan’, moments of actor Arjun Kapoor’s fun in the film ‘Tevar’ were captured in the shadow of the Taj Mahal. The song Ajeuba from the 1998 film Jeans, released in 1998, features shots of actress Aishwarya Rai. The Taj Mahal was filmed in songs by Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Bewafa, Yamla Pagla Deewana and Scorpion.

Not only on the big screen, but also on the small screen, the magic of the Taj Mahal is going up and speaking. Serial makers put the backdrop of about 12 serials back to back in Agra and put the Taj Mahal at the center of the story. Serial farewell, the shooting of Baba Mohe Aiso Var Dhundho was shot in Agra for several months. The cast of the serial was shot in the streets of Tajganj. More than 70 albums and more than 40 commercials have been shot at the Taj Mahal. These days, the Taj Mahal is appearing on more than 15 advertisements on TV.

As part of the serious efforts being made by the government to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of Devbhoomi (the land of Gods) Uttarakhand, it is being depicted through painting for the Kumbh.  The colors of the traditions and culture of the Devbhoomi are engraved on the walls and vacant spaces. Somewhere images of deities, gods and religious traditions have come alive.
